The formal Ball was first brought to Russia by Peter the Great in the 18th century. It became popular in capitals and provinces in the Russian Empire and was not only a means of amusement but also a place for serious discussions and conversation.

Since that time, formal and classical dances were taught as part of the curriculum in Russian universities, colleges and schools. By the 19th century formal dancing reached its peak in Russia and St. Petersburg and Moscow were the most significant centers of choreography in Europe. January and February were typically the months of the Ball season. By the end of the 19th century, formal Russian balls began to decline in popularity.

In the 1960’s and 70’s there was a resurgence of interest in Russian style formal balls with revivals in Russia, Europe and the United States. The 54th Chicago St. Tatiana’s Day Ball will take place on Friday, January 24th, 2020 at The Monaco Ballroom, DoubleTree Hotel in Skokie, IL.
